A chart for Labor Day

From a report by Josh Bivens and Larry Mishel that I linked to in last week’s Digest (but have only skimmed to date).  Paul Krugman posted a nice top-level takeway yesterday evening.  From his concluding paragraph:

…the next time you hear someone claiming that middle-class families have, in fact, seen a big rise in living standards, you should know that to the extent that this is true (which is less than claimed), it’s mainly about working more hours. Pay really has almost stagnated despite rising productivity.

Music for Friday night

Last Friday Krugman posted a video of Courtney Barnett for his Friday night musical interlude – video here.   I liked it – hadn’t heard of her before.  In doing my due diligence I also came across her NPR Tiny Desk Concert – very good also.  My favorite though was she and her band covering The Breeders’ “Cannonball”:

Thought for the Day: 2 September 2015

Both [Sanders and Trump] are calling for a political revolution, Sanders even more directly than Trump. But there are different kinds of political revolutions and they are fueled by different kinds of momentum. There are political revolutions of the considered spirit and political revolutions of the raw appetites. There was the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia and there was the Committee of Public Safety in Paris. If the people caught up in the revolution are very lucky, the second form of revolution does nothing except add urgency to the first form. If they’re not lucky, the appetites overwhelm the spirit, and heads of all kinds begin to fill all kinds of baskets.
